Borough President James Oddo announced a planning team has been formed to submit an application for a new specialized charter school that would support students with dyslexia and language based learning challenges.  More than 9,000 students on Staten Island suffer from dyslexia, but some say the borough lacks resources to help them.

Officials at the event say this specialized school is long overdue.

"Tragically, all across schools on Staten Island there are students who aren't getting the type education they deserve," said Oddo.

"For a school in Staten Island for dyslexic kids it would be amazing," said Leia Schwartz who is the author of Dyslexic Renegade.

Oddo and the Dyslexia Planning team hope to have the school up and running by September of 2018.
