Hundreds of kids with disabilities met for a day of friendly competition.

The Parks Department hosted its annual Paralympics Monday at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.

Students with special needs from across the city spent the day competing in track and field events.

Organizers designed the races to accommodate all of the kids, even those who use a wheelchair.

For many, it was a chance to prove just how much they can accomplish.

"I didn't know I could do that and I really surprised myself," said one Participant

"It was awesome to be in the race you know," said another Participant.

"For them, it's great because they're getting away from their comfort zone and going somewhere new and experiencing something new," said Christopher Noel of the NYC Parks Dept

This was the borough's first time hosting the event.

It's been held on Randall's Island for the last 8 years.
