Using music as an outlet to speak out against drug use, Daniel Haley writes songs about his struggle with addiction.

"I’ve been in recovery for almost three years now, this time around been struggling with addictions for like ten years," said Daniel Haley, a recovering addict.

Haley says his message is more urgent now than ever. Another wave of drug overdoses this month killed more than a dozen people in just two weeks in the borough. For many, it hits close to home.

"I lost my cousin about two weeks ago to an overdose on Staten Island, If we could even help one person to get clean,” said Kristina Catanese, a Volunteer with Heroes of Hope.

Kristina says she's been in recovery herself for more than a year now.

That's why she volunteers with Heroes of Hope, a charity that raises money and awareness for drug treatment programs.

"If the epidemic is making more noise than we are, then theres a problem, and we refuse for that to happen any longer," said Reverend Joseph Chevere, the Founder of Heroes of Hope

The organization held a fundraiser held over the weekend, and raised enough money to send at least two addicts to Carl’s House Drug treatment program. But volunteers say there are so many more on the waiting list.

"There has to be more organizations like us, free of charge. You can call there for a loved one and we'll hook you up like with a detox or rehab in the community. For me, I'm in a 12 step program and that's what saved my life," said Nicole McCarthy, with Carl's House

Governor Cuomo created a ‘Drug Task Force’ back in May to help save lives.

The action plan includes building a new drug treatment facility on Port Richmond Avenue.

Construction won’t begin until next year, and won’t be complete until 2019.

That's why volunteers want to get the word out,  that local groups like Heroes of Hope and Carl's House can help now.

“I just want anyone to know who's struggling that there is a way out and you just have to ask for help and people are willing to help you,” said McCarthy.

If you or someone you know needs help, you can call Carl's House at 718-412-1851.
