As the temperature climbs into the mid 90s, Chamila Dawalage barely breaks a sweat. He works at this gas station on Victory Boulevard.

Dawalage says compared to the weather he endured in his home country of Sri Lanka, this heatwave is a breeze, no pun intended.

"I like this weather because it is not cold," he said.

Dawalage says he is drinking plenty of water, something City Officials are urging all New Yorkers to do during a heatwave.

Officials say prolonged exposure to heat can be harmful and potentially fatal. They also remind us to check on elderly neighbors and make sure our four legged friends are hydrated too!

This skate park in Port Richmond is usually packed on the weekends, but on Sunday, NY1 spotted only a few brave people who said they were taking lots of breaks in the shade.

"After three or 4 tricks I had to take a break. I die. It's way to hot," said one skater.

"Its scorching. You can't touch the floor. It burns you. All the metal burns you," added another.

People are using cooling centers and public pools as options to cool off during the heat.

The Wilson family tells us they've been coming to Faber Pool in Port Richmond to cool off for more than two decades.

"Its everything. Especially for some of the kids in the community. This is their output. Their parents work all week. The kids come over here an enjoy themselves and stay cool," said Nerida Wilson.

Meanwhile, Cashmere Thomas says she came all the way from the Bronx for a splash

"Its fun because you can spend time with them, swim with them and play," said Thomas.

There is still a lot more time to cool off. The city's pools will be open 7 days a week through September 11th.
