By the sound of it, you would have thought you were in Manhattan’s theatre district but the sights and sounds of Broadway took over the Staten Island waterfront. It all took place along National Lighthouse Point Plaza.
People poured in to watch free performances from the musicals "She Loves me" and "Fiddler on the Roof."
It was all part of a new initiative launched by the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment.
The summer series is called "Broadway in the Boros"
Sara and Holland Schanzer hopped on the ferry from Manhattan to catch the show.
"It's a 20 minute ride and it's well worth it to come and explore a wonderful place," said Schanzer.
"We're thrilled to be bringing ‘Broadway in the Boros’ out here," said Julie Menin, the MOME commissioner.
She says the summer series allows everyone to experience a bit of Broadway.
"For many New Yorkers obviously going to a Broadway show is cost prohibitive so we want to be able to bring these Broadway performances to residents all across the city," said Menin.
The Broadway show actors NY1 spoke with said they were excited to be a part of the kickoff performance.
"I think it's exciting to reach out to the different parts of this place we call New York," said Fiddler on the Roof Actor, Matt Moisey.
"It's nice to bring Broadway caliber performances all over New York City and kind of inform people to come see Broadway shows and take the ferry over to Manhattan," said She Loves Me Actor Preston Truman Boyd.
Li Siegel and her husband Harris of Willowbrook have a message for the organizers.
"Thank you for remembering us in your case we weren't the forgotten borough so thank you for coming here," said Li Siegel.
The next free show will take place in Brooklyn on July 15th.
