It was "lights, camera, action" for students of one Island school Thursday.

Seventh graders from Lavelle Prep hosted their “U.S. History Film Festival” at the Atrium Stadium Cinemas.

During the school year, students have been learning about the Quarantine Hospital that once stood in Tompkinsville in the 1800s. They took what they learned and wrote and acted in 7 different movies, all filmed at Historic Richmondtown.

“It's a good way for me to learn because it's like, it grabs people's attention,” said student A.J. Morales.

“When we learn, we get bored,” said student Tatiana Torres. “But when we learn about it and make stories about the real thing, it helps us.”

“Their smiles and everything they get out of the experience is what teaching is all about,” added drama teacher Lee Poerio.

This was the third year in a row the school hosted a film festival of this kind.
