A mental health awareness campaign is underway here in the borough.

The National Alliance of Mental Health, or NAMI, made the announcement Monday alongside elected officials.

The group will be placing these ribbons across the Island to spread the word about mental illness.

NAMI leaders say they hope the effort will encourage people to get the help they need without feeling ashamed.

"We want the ribbon to be the catalyst to people talking about mental health issues and to start the dialogue so we can end the stigma," said Linda Wilson of NAMI NYC.

"The more we speak of it I think the less fear and negative attitude people will have that's a hope," said Volunteer Joan Rowley.

Borough President James Oddo also declared May Mental Health Awareness Month here in the borough.
