Shoppers could soon have to pay up if they want to use carryout bags at the store.

City Council Speaker Melissa-Mark Viverito and Mayor DeBlasio are backing a bill that would require retailers and grocers to charge at least 5-cents for each plastic and paper bag.

Supporters say many bags end up in landfills, on the streets or get stuck in storm drains.

Under the proposal, stores would keep the money to cover the cost of providing bags.

Customers who bring their own would not be charged.

We caught up with shoppers here in the borough to see what they think of the plan.

"I think it's wise because of the environment but in another respect I don't because here we go another thing we have to put out money for," said one shopper

"We don't get a break at all. Everything is money, money, money," said another shopper.

Sources say the Council will vote on the bill later this week.
