Athletes honored A Staten Island teen over the weekend who tragically passed away two years ago.

Family and friends came together at the 2nd annual 'Miles Kirkland-Thomas Remembrance Day' at Curtis High School Sunday. Kirkland died in 2014 during football practice from undiagnosed heart complications. The annual event supplies health screenings such as EKG's and blood pressure tests for athletes.

"Miles is a person who always tried to help the next person out," said Jamel McGinnis, a Curtis High School Student and a friend of Kirkland.

"He was community oriented. I can tell you for a fact if he was here, this is something he would've been doing himself and he would've been first and foremost here because that's the type of young man he was," said Jamar Thomas, the Father of Miles Kirkland-Thomas.

'The Chad Foundation for Athletes and Artists' and 'HEALTH For Youths' helped over 50 athletes receive the heart screenings.
