College students welcomed a special guest Wednesday in honor of Black History Month.

World War 2 veteran William Morris Junior paid a visit to Wagner College Wednesday afternoon. The 96-year-old spoke about his military career in an all-black artillery regiment. Morris has been sharing his story with students across the borough for several years.

Educators say bringing in guest speakers adds a new element to coursework.

“That a real person is here you know he fought he was at Omaha Beach. He was there on D-Day,” said Rita Reynolds, with the Wagner College History Department. “I don't think there's any way a book can relay that.”

“You have to know this history. There's no way you can know the one side of history and not know this side of history - it comes hand in hand,” added student Kendle Bramble.

Morris received Borough Hall's prestigious Maniscalco Community Service Award earlier this month.
