Staten Island officials are using pizza boxes to show residents how they can go green.

Councilman Steven Matteo, Staten Island Borough President James Oddo, Councilwoman Debi Rose, Councilman Joseph Borelli and Myles Cohen, president of Pratt Industries’ recycling division announced Thursday that more than 1,000 limited edition pizza boxes, with a "Made in Staten Island" logo, will be made available at pizzerias across the borough.

"We want them to recycle, we want them to visit our small businesses, our local pizzerias, get a "Made in Staten Island" Staten Island-proud pizza box, and then recycle that box," NYC Coucilman Steven Matteo (R-Staten Island) said.

The backdrop for the announcement was one of the establishments that will have the boxes, Goodfellas Pizzeria.

The boxes were made, entirely of recycled paper, at Pratt Industries' mill in Travis.

Organizers hope that the pizza boxes will encourage people to be more eco-friendly.

"This allows the residents of Staten Island to see where their paper that they put on the curb this morning ends up at the end of the day, and that's right back here on Staten Island in a pizza box," said New York City Department of Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia.

Last year the Department of Sanitation collected more than 300,000 tons of paper from city residents, including more than 25,000 tons from Staten Island.
