A local lawmaker wants to change how drug dealers are dealt with here in New York.

Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis says under the current law, some convicted drug dealers can be sent to treatment programs rather than jail.

She says that is unacceptable, as the borough deals with a major heroin and prescription drug crisis.

"I can't stress enough how important it is that we change this law and that we make sure we keep drug dealers in jail where they belong," Malliotakis said.

Malliotakis made the comments as lawmakers released a report on drug abuse in New York.  The Assembly Minority members reccomended more Public Service Announcements, more education in schools and better access to recovery programs.
