Hundreds of families received fresh fruits and vegetables for the week.

Food Bank for New York City hosted a day of service Monday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Volunteers handed out hundreds of bags filled with fresh produce outside First United Christian Church.

It's all part of a citywide celebration that organizers say will feed 25-hundred households.

"A really important part of Martin Luther King's legacy is all about service in the community and bringing everybody together on a central concern and our concern obviously is feeding more New Yorkers," Brady Koch, Food Bank for NYC, said.

"There's a lot more hunger on Staten Island. We have a lot more people coming to Staten Island for whatever the reason and we can help," The Reverend Lloyd Land, First United Christian Church, said.

First United Christian Church says more than 120 families visit it's food pantry each week.
