Instead of sleeping in on Saturday mornings - these girls spent their summer vacation building confidence, character, and creativity.

They're all part of SummHER Saturdays - a new 8-week empowerment program for young girls on Staten Island.

The mission - to educate and energize young women ages 8 to 17 through various workshops and activities.

"This program gives you a chance to express how beautiful you are, and how lovely you are," said Marifte Cummings.

The program was founded by Hananatu Tunis as part of a larger initiative she started called One Million Girls - which aims to empower women globally.

Some activities at SummHER Saturdays include art, dance, and anti-bullying seminars.

"They'll be independent human beings, intelligent human beings, women of purpose, women of courage, women of boldness...and in order to do that you have to start now," said Tunis.

No matter what they learn about during the day - each SummHER workshop ends with a walk on the runway.

"Before this, I felt a little insecure and like I'm not pretty enough, and after this program I feel like I'm pretty and confident, and like I can do anything," said Victoria Weah.

"You have to think of the runway as life, and in your everyday life when you go to school, when you go to class, when you're at work - you have to be confident," said Tunis.

Tunis tells us SummHER Saturdays were such a success - she'll be extending it to Saturdays in the fall too.
