It may be hard to believe just looking at it now, but the former Department of Health building at 55 Stuyvesant Place could soon transform into a bustling technology and media hub.

Borough President James Oddo made the announcement after teaming up with New York City's Economic Development Corporation and the Mayor's Office. Now they say they're beginning the process by accepting ideas to redevelop the building.

"We think great things can happen by taking that building and saying to the world, hey - give us your best, creative ideas," said Oddo.

They're seeking ideas from just about anyone - but prefer those that encourage the use of media and technology to create a local state of the art hub for innovation.

Given the recent growth of the North Shore including development plans such as the Bay Street Corridor, New York Wheel and Empire Outlets - many residents said it's the perfect location for a modern tech scene.

"The community has changed, you have a lot of techy people," explained Monica Evans of St. George.

The city also tells NY1 the redevelopment will include a hiring and wage program that will support the local community and help create jobs. The Staten Island Chamber of Commerce hopes it will be a big boost for the local economy.

"To have home-grown ideas coming out of out borough I think it's significant," said Linda Baran, President/CEO of the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce.

"We're not downtown Manhattan, we're not Brooklyn, but there's something really unique happening along this corridor - and we think this is a natural fit," added Oddo.

The deadline for proposals is September 24.

Meantime, the city plans to host an informational meeting on July 28.
