The start of winter usually refers to the atronomical season when the earth is tilted furthest away from the sun, which happens December 21st this year in the Northern Hemisphere. The sun is at a lower point in the sky as days and nights become shorter. But from a meteorological standpoint, winter begins on December 1st and ends February 28th.

Meteorological seasons are broken up into four equal length seasons that are split into three months each. Spring (March, April, May), Summer (June, July, August), and Autumn (September, October, November). This makes it easier for meteorologists to observe and compare monthly statistics based on weather patterns.

After a busy hurricane season with 17 names storms this year, it appears that winter is off to a quiet start. In fact, temperatures are higher than they should be this time of year. You can expect plenty of sunshine today with highs in the low 50s.

Even though a cold front will knock temperatures down into the 30s overnight, milder air will arrive again next week.

So if you haven't put up holiday decorations yet, now is the time to do it because temperatures are expected to appraoch 60 degrees next week.

However, don't get too comfortable with these unseasonably mild conditions. Much colder air will follow for the second full week of December.

If you're looking for something fun to do this weekend, you can check out the Supermoon. The moon becomes full Sunday morning, but it will officially reach Supermoon status Monday at 3:45 a.m. The best time to view this phenomenon will be Sunday evening around 7 when the moon appears 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than normal.

Have a great Weekend!
