ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Pittsford's David Petrison and Rush-Henrietta's Koz Vincent both qualified for the State Diving meet next month: Both are seniors and both are at the top of their sport.

"People don't really understand how challenging diving is they just think 'Oh wow that's easy, they're just flipping off boards,'" Vincent said.

"We do a lot of conditioning still but a lot of it is mental," Petrison said.

And the two have found quite a unique working relationship.

"So Koz is one of my best friends, and it's definitely a competitive relationship," Petrison said.

"Definitely we always push each other," Vincent said.

"I think the competitiveness of it is good for both of us," Petrison said.

And now a third, slightly fresher face, has joined their ranks: 8th grader Daley Fraser finished just behind Petrison and Vincent at sectionals.

"I thought it was funny when I was standing on the podium and I was like the shortest kid," Fraser said.

Competitors, friends, these three have found common ground on the edge of a board.

"And it's just awesome, because you become family with people you don't even know," Vincent said.

All three divers also dive for Upstate NY, a club program, outside of school. They also share a similar story when it comes to how they got into diving: Gymnastics.

With Petrison and Vincent off to states, and soon college, Fraser has some big shoes to fill.

"I want to, like kind of do what they did at sectionals, next year, and I also want to make states, just like they did," Fraser said.
