Some local elementary school students prove it doesn't matter how small you are -- you can still make a big difference. NY1's Leisha Majtan introduces our latest Queens People of the Week.

Isabel Vidal and some of her friends are getting dirty to keep their neighborhood clean.

“We're trying to beautify Jackson Heights and I think that's what Jackson Heights just needs, a little beautifying,” said Isabel Vidal, the Queens Person of the Week.

The 9-year-old recently spent the day with some friends from the Renaissance Charter School, helping to clean up and weed the garden in front of the Jackson Heights Post Office.

“The weeds here are taking away the nutrients and the soil from these plants that are supposed to be at the post office and we are stopping it,” said Aidan Canavan, the Queens Person of the Week.

The 4th and 5th graders are part of their school's Garden Club.

All summer long, they've been learning about gardening and taking care of the environment.

To wrap up their lesson, they teamed up with the Jackson Heights Beautification group, putting their new green thumbs to work.

“It's important for kids in the city to be exposed to all this green stuff. We want to instill values that are important in the kids,” said Len Maniace, the President of the Jackson Heights Beautification Group.

“I think it's going to be better for the plants to grow and they will grow more beautifully,” added Annabella Perez Salvi, the Queens Person of the Week.

Beauty that can also be found in the hard work and dedication of these young kids.

“Follow the example of these kids. These kids are getting involved with their neighborhood and trying to make it better. We'd love to have more adults doing that as well,” added Maniace.

And so for allowing Jackson Heights to blossom to new heights, these students are our Queens People of the Week.
