Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced a new regional coalition to combat gun violence.

The group was formed along with governors from New Jersey, Connecticut and Rhode Island.

The "States for Gun Safety" will create a database to share information on individuals who are prohibited from purchasing and possessing a firearm in each state.

The coalition will also trace guns that are used in crimes, as well as those that are transported across state borders.

Cuomo says the coalition comes after repeated failed attempts by federal lawmakers to pass gun reform.

"The Florida Parkland massacre, one would hope that it would spur responsible federal action, but we're not going to hold our breath and we're not going to risk our children's lives," Cuomo said. "You have the high school students showing more leadership than the leaders in Washington. What they said on TV was that it shouldn't be a Democratic or Republican issue, it's an issue of life and death."

Cuomo added that the states participating in the coalition have been well ahead of the federal government when it comes to gun control.

He also proposed new legislation in his State of the State to remove firearms from those who commit domestic violence crimes.
