The Bedford Union Armory in Brooklyn will house a new community and recreation center, and it will be named for a former aide to the governor who was fatally shot near the area three years ago.

"The young people out here need alternatives to the street, that we have to provide more training, more recreation, more jobs because too many people have lost their lives," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said at the announcement ceremony Monday.

Cuomo announced the creation of the Carey Gabay Center, a 60,000-square-foot facility that is expected to feature community and recreational space, a job training center, and midnight basketball.

Gabay died three years ago after he left his Brooklyn home to attend the J'Ouvert festivities and was hit by stray gunfire.

The governor said the state will invest up to $15 million to build the Carey Gabay Center, which is also slated to feature a permanent space for activities related to the parade.
