A craft brewery founded more than five years ago in Queens is expanding even faster than its owner imagined.

They have doubled production almost overnight with the purchase of a new plant upstate and there are plans to sell their beer overseas. NY1's Clodagh McGowan filed the following report.

A 5,000 square foot building in Astoria is the home of Singlecut Beersmiths. The locally brewed craft beer company is well-known throughout the borough for its hoppy IPAs. But the demand for their beer has been increasing, so they have expanded their footprint.

"At the time that we opened, five and a half years ago, we thought it would be 10 years before we maxed out our capacity but we're there much sooner than we anticipated," said Rich Buceta, the founder of Singlecut Beersmiths.

The company recently purchased a brewery in Clifton Park, about an hour north of Albany and expanded operations there. Singlecut is part of a booming craft beer, wine and spirits industry in New York State. Here in the city, there were just eight breweries in 2012, according to the State Liquor Authority there are now 43.

"The New York City landscape was devoid of honest to goodness brick and mortar breweries. So, there was a real need," said Buceta.

While production is already underway at the Clifton Park facility, Astoria will continue to be Singlecut's flagship location

"Now with all our extra square footage in the capital district, we're able to really concentrate on our roots here, which is really experimental and pushing the boundaries of modern brewing," said Dan Bronson the general manager of Singlecut Beersmiths.

Singlecut's new upstate plant is more than seven times larger than its Queens base. It already has allowed the company to double production and the hope is to triple output before long.

Right now, Singlecut is available in eight states. Soon, it will be available in Japan and Scandinavia.

"Which is the wildest foray that I ever could have imagined," said Buceta.
