New legislation is being considered to ban plastic straws in the city but some Queens businesses are already ahead of the game.

The concessions on the Rockaway Beach Boardwalk have all stopped using plastic straws, water bottles and bags.

The businesses introduced their "Ocean Awareness Program" two years ago to help educate people on the waste plastic creates. Owners say customers took time to get used the paper straws but realize they're doing their part to help the environment.

"Living on the ocean, doing business on the ocean, it was really important for us to do everything that we could to minimize single use plastics," said Michael Perzy Powers, the owner of Low Tide Bar and High97.

For those who are still getting used to the idea of paper straws, one concession stand is selling an engraved re-usable aluminum straw.
