Residents of South Queens were joined by members of the 105th precinct and local elected officials, on Thursday, during a celebration.

The event was held to highlight the end of an approval process that will create a new NYPD police precinct in Queens.

The new precinct will be the NYPD’s 116th police precinct and will cover a portion of the area now covered by the 105th precinct.

The 70 million dollar facility will be built adjacent to the 105th precinct's satellite location.

The space will feature an area designated for community use, a public plaza and state of the art policing technology.

"It will save lives and we won’t have to wait as long as we have in the past on a response time," said Laurelton Resident Bess Debetham.

Officials say they are still in the design phases of the project and plan to break ground by the end of next year.

Construction on the precinct is scheduled for completion by 2022.
