The Department of Transportation is taking this week to remind motorists to be cautious while driving through work zones.

Transporation workers gathered on an overpass above the Grand Central Parkway in Queens to bring attention to National Work Zone Awareness Week.

The annual event fell coincidentally, just one week after a Bridges Electrician was fatally struck by a vehicle in the Bronx.

"I call today on all drivers, all people who are out on the roads, please drive safely, drive carefully. you are going to get to where you need to go. When you see  men and women out on our roads, on our bridge, our sidewalks, by the highways, slow down and make sure that they can get home safely to their families," said Commissioner Polly Trottenberg.

According to officials, 28 DOT workers have been injured in work zone incidents since 2009 and five have died from work zone-related events over the last two decades.
