WASHINGTON — Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, took the podium Thursday at the Conservative Political Action Committee, offering a metaphor that has left many saying “huh?”

On Thursday, according to the Hill, Cruz was asked a question by moderator and Federalist founder Ben Domenech about a 1997 episode titled, "The Cartridge Family."

In the episode, Homer’s pro-gun stance is pitted against Lisa’s belief that the Second Amendment is outdated and “has no meaning today.”

Domenech inquired, "How might this pop reference be illuminating?"

Cruz responded by saying:

"The Democrats are the party of Lisa Simpson and Republicans are happily the party of Homer, Bart, Maggie and Marge."

For those who aren’t keen on “Simpsons" trivia, Lisa is the middle child of the dysfunctional family, very intelligent and passionate about her beliefs.

Bart is Lisa’s brother; Homer, her father; Marge, her mother; and Maggie, her baby sister.

One of the show's original writers spoke out regarding Cruz's statement.

"Ted Cruz says Maggie Simpson would vote for him," Al Jean said. "I think Ted's the one who could use a pacifier in his mouth."

Jean added, "The way things are going even Mr. Burns is thinking of becoming a Democrat."

Of note, left-leaning Lisa becomes president in a March 2000 episode, in which she succeeds President Trump, who left the country with "quite a budget crunch."
