Some elected officials in Brooklyn want to turn Black History Month into a year-long learning lesson.

Senator Jesse Hamilton and Assemblywoman Diana Richardson are calling for black history education to be added to the curriculum for grades K through 12 in New York Schools.

They joined students and teachers at a rally Wednesday outside the Dr. Betty Shabazz school in Brownsville in recognition of the doctor's leadership. Organizers say the rally was also in solidarity with Malcolm Xavier Combs, who tried to have the name "Malcolm X" put on his senior sweater at Christ the King High School in Queens.

They say this rally also serves to stand against the principal of Intermediate School 224 in the Bronx, who allegedly told an English teacher she should not teach about the Harlem Renaissance.

"It's important for our children to know that their history is greater than just slavery and it's just greater than one month," said Richardson

The bill passed in the senate but stalled in the assembly.
