RALEIGH -- According to Public Policy Polling, a left-leaning polling firm based in Raleigh, Democrats currently hold a lead in N.C. for elections taking place this fall.

In a survey of registered voters which took place Jan. 21 through Jan. 23, PPP reports the following:

  • President Donald Trump: 42 percent approve, 50 percent disapprove, 8 percent are not sure
  • Governor Roy Cooper: 49 percent approve, 33 percent disapprove,  18 percent are not sure
  • The NC General Assembly: 19 percent approve, 51 percent disapprove, 31 percent are not sure
  • Senator Richard Burr: 31 percent approve, 43 percent disapprove, 26 percent are not sure
  • Senator Thom Tillis: 28 percent approve, 45 percent disapprove, 27 percent are not sure

PPP also asked participants their opinions of former North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory. 44 percent said they would not like to see Pat McCrory run for governor again in 2020, to the 42 percent who would.

45 percent of participants say they preferred Roy Cooper to Pat McCrory, and 39 percents say they prefer McCrory to Cooper.

“With new maps, a popular Governor, and the energy of the voters on their side Democrats are almost certain to make gains in the legislature this year,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling.

In addition to asking about politics, PPP also asked participants whether they would root for Duke or UNC when they play basketball next month. 31 percent say they are rooting for Duke, 41 percent say UNC, and 28 percent are not sure.
