A former mayoral candidate brings people together to discuss issues facing Staten Island.

State Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis hosted a breakfast at the Excelsior Grand Sunday.

The goal of the event is to encourage people to participate in government, and to open a discussion about the current state of the borough.

Topics discussed included congestion pricing, whether or not New York should be a sanctuary city, and the boroughs drug epidemic.

"We need to get involved. This breakfast is to thank all of those volunteers and supporters that did get involved in my race, perhaps for the first time.  But we want them to continue to do so. And make their voices be heard," said Malliotakis.

Malliotakis says the mayors race may be over, but there's still plenty of work that needs to be done.
