A new honor for the immigrant Army private who died saving people from a vicious Bronx fire. NY1's Gene Apodaca has the story.

Private Emmanuel Mensah rescued four people from this burning building in December before he lost his life.  He was among 13 people killed in that blaze.

As recognition of his heroism, Councilman Ritchie Torres wants the city to rename the corner of East 187th and Prospect Avenue after him.

"There was more to the Belmont fire than tragedy, there was moral inspiration there was heroism and we’re living in a time when immigrants are under siege from the President of the United States so I want to point to Emmanuel Mensah as an example of the very best that our community and our country has to offer," Councilmember Torres said.

"That’s him that’s the way he is, so I’m proud of what he did," said Mensah's father. "I wish I could do the same thing."

It is one more honor for Mensah, who has already been awarded the Soldier's Medal, the Army's highest peacetime honor for bravery, and the Medal of Valor.

Meantime, Catholic Charities has announced it has raised some $300,000 for fire victims.
