NEW YORK - Members of the City Council are urging young immigrants to renew their protected status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

They're calling Thursday a DACA Day of Action.

President Donald Trump announced plans to end the program last year.

But so-called "Dreamers" were given a second chance after a judge temporarily blocked the move last week.

NY1 spoke with a DACA recipient who came to the U.S when he was 10 years old.

He said, "I grew up thinking that with enough time and with enough knowledge and with enough connections here that I would be. But I have been living for the past 16 years in a country that has tried time and time again to push me out. But I’m still here and I’m still fighting."

Congress is locked in negotiations right now for a spending bill that also addresses immigration.

If a deal is not reached by midnight Friday - there will be a government shutdown.

Some Democrats say they will not support the bill if it doesn't include a fix for DACA, which expires in March.
