The only hospital in the Rockaways gets some improvements to one of its departments.

St. John's Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway, now has a newly renovated wound care center.

The center has two new hyperbaric oxygen chambers, which can be used to treat diabetes and carbon monoxide poisoning, among other health problems.

The staff also specializes in synthetic skin grafts, compression wraps and more.

"There's a close place to them where they can get treated and they can get healed and they don't have to travel. The next nearest one is 45 minutes to an hour away," said Dr. Thomas Lubeski, Medical Director of the Wound Care Center.

Those aren't the only renovations being made around the hospital.

Upgrades to the emergency department are on track to be completed by early next year.
