Leave yourself extra time and expect delays today if you're catching a flight at John F. Kennedy Airport.

A pipe burst at Terminal 4 Sunday, further crippling service already slowed by widespread delays.

The Port Authority says a pipe for the sprinkler system froze and then burst.

Three inches of water flooded the terminal, prompting a partial shutdown for four hours.

Officials also had to shut off electricity in the area.

"The water cascaded out onto the frontage and into the inner roadway. With the freezing temparatures that meant that ice formed--extremely dangerous to passengers and to others. So the result was that both the southern two-thirds of the arrivals area itself, the customs facility where the exits were also compromised and the inner roadway closure all severely limited operations," said Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton.

Many international flights had to be diverted to other airports.

The Port Authority is looking into why the pipe was not weather protected.
