New Yorkers were turning up the heat at record numbers on New Year's Eve.

Con Edison says it provided the city and Westchester County with 1.3 million dekatherms of gas.

The company says that's a new record.

It shattered the one set just days before at 1.26 million dekatherms.

Con Ed is offering up a few tips to help residents get through this bitter cold stretch..

They suggest turning down your thermostat when you aren't home, using weather strip in attics and stairwells, and checking the filters on your forced-air furnace.

A reminder to customers that they should never use a gas oven to heat a room.
