They believe Whitman lived at the location back in 1855 when he published one of his most influential works, "Leaves of Grass."

"After careful consideration, LPC determined that 99 Ryerson Street does not rise to the level of a potential individual landmark. It was only briefly associated with Walt Whitman, and the house does not retain the historic appearance or fabric present when the Whitman family lived there," the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission said in a statement Friday night.
