Three boats in the NYC Ferry fleet have been pulled out of service for repairs, the company that operates the boats and the Coast Guard confirmed Monday.

A spokesperson for NYC Ferry says keel coolers on the three boats were not properly aligned, which they say led to corrosion on the hulls of the ships.

The Coast Guard confirmed it ordered repairs to the vessels after "heavy pitting" was discovered on the hulls during an inspection. They say the boats will not be able to go back into the water until the Coast Guard conducts the repairs.

The New York Post initially reported that there were holes on the ships, but a spokesperson for NYC Ferry said the holes occurred during repairs, not before.

The repairs come just six months after service was rolled out.

The company Hornblower operates NYC Ferry.

The company downplayed the issue in a statement saying, "This is a minor issue affecting three boats. It hasn’t impacted service and it won’t cost the City a penny to fix. Regular inspections caught it early and solved it quickly, which means the system is working."
