CHARLOTTE -- Jurors unanimously found Greg Wheeling guilty in the death in Kelli Putnam. Prosecutors said Wheeling was responsible for killing Putnam as he sped down South Boulevard while impaired - and struck her.

Wheeling was found guilty of second degree murder.

The jury chose that conviction instead of the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter,  which means the jury finds wheeling guilty of actual malice instead of just culpable negligence.

He will serve a minimum of 13 years in prison, with about a 16 and a half year max.

Jurors deliberated 3.5 hours Monday and since 9:30 Tuesday morning before they returned to the courtroom.

Through the case, the prosecution established wheeling had a .13 blood alcohol content.

Experts estimate wheeling drove 67 in a 35 the time of the crash.

It is important to remember, the defense was able to add involuntary manslaughter as an alternative to second degree murder midway through the trial last week.

That would have only had a little more than a year mandatory sentencing.
