CHARLOTTE – A high school basketball coach is facing charges after fighting another coach on school grounds Wednesday.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg officers say they responded to Charlotte Country Day School, located on Carmel Road, just before 6:30 p.m. after receiving a call from the school’s security.

The school’s junior varsity women’s basketball coach, 29-year-old Tyrez Neal, was charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds.

According to officers, the fight occurred between Neal and an assistant coach with the varsity men’s basketball team. Officers say Neal threatened 29-year-old Dijuan Harris with the use of a firearm during the incident.

Two guns belonging to Neal were found on campus. No students were harmed.

In a statement Thursday morning, Charlotte Country Day School leaders said in part: "We continue to be in close communication with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department and we thank them for their fast response and concern for the well-being of our community."

Neal is being held at the county jail on a $2,000 unsecured bond.

Officials say both coaches are no longer employed by the school.
