Volunteers at the Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce spend their time making Flushing a better place to live, work and play. They are NY1's latest Queens People of the Week.

An international student and a visual artist.

Two volunteers who come from different backgrounds, with the same mission: to help their neighbors in need.

"I want to serve the community make people working here and living here greater than before" said Yan Lin one of our Queen People of the Week.

She and Maureen Hoon spend their time volunteering at the Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce.

The non-profit helps small business owners and entrepreneurs by providing different services.

Hoon and Lin both work closely with members, and help carry out various initiatives and events.

"A green market here, Flushing night out and many many community events that brought together business owners, cultural organizations and people from all walks of life" added Hoon.

For the last year Hoon, a Singapore native, has advised local small businesses on publicity strategies.

She says her experience as a visual artist has helped her design marketing campaigns.

"I found that there were a lot of challenges here in terms of issues with diversity and inclusiveness that I thought I could contribute."

Lin on the other hand is a student from China.

She helps coordinate many of the events the chamber hosts.

She says she looks forward to seeing the community benefit from her work.

"People can come together, know each other then do better for their business. I think it is a very good opportunity for them."

Through their efforts, the volunteers hope to spur economic growth in Flushing.

But, Lin says the best part of the job is getting to know fellow Queens residents.

"I learn a lot from the people so I want to provide what I can do for the community more good."

And so for making Flushing a better place to live, work, eat and play, volunteers at the Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce are our Queens People of the Week.
