A historic church is asking the community to help fund emergency repairs.

Volunteers have started an online fundraiser on behalf of the Reformed Church on Staten Island in an effort to help fix its roof.

A storm damaged the landmarked building this past spring, causing a major leak.

Church officials said it would cost between $6,000 and $7,000 to fix the problem.

They told NY1 it's just one of many repairs needed to maintain the more than 170-year-old building.

"We're looking at a major roof replacement and then you start talking about pointing the bricks and then fixing the stained glass windows and before long you're talking about millions of dollars’ worth of repairs," said Warren MacKenzie, and elder at the Reformed Church on Staten Island.
