SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A second Syracuse school has been cleaned and treated for bed bugs this week, this time Webster Elementary.

Officials believe a student's backpack brought the bed bug into the school. The same day, officials also found another bed bug at Henninger High School. As a result, the district is asking families to assist in ending the problem.

"It's work, but it can be done, though," Bugs Be Gone owner Glenn Stewart said.

Stewart said his volume of bed bug cases is up this year. He said bed bugs are difficult pests to get rid of.

"You have to go in and get them," Stewart said. "They're not a highly mobile bug. They tend to migrate from place to place or hitchhike."

It's at homes where Syracuse school officials believe their issue is coming from. At Webster Elementary, school social workers confirmed that the student whose backpack brought in bed bugs also has them in the student's apartment.

While students bringing bed bugs into school is certainly a concern, it also goes both ways. Families can take steps to make sure that their child doesn't bring a bed bug from school back into the home.

"To be super cautious, when they get home, put the clothes in a bag and put them straight in a dryer," Stewart said.

He says do not put clothes into the wash, as many people may think.

"Water will not help, so washing your clothes, we see them a lot in washing machines," Stewart said. "Water is not the answer."

And Stewart said a home's sanitation is not the problem. Bed bugs can find their way inside regardless of condition.
