The city has launched a new initiative to provide services and outreach to LGBTQ youth, including a new 24 hour drop-in center in Jamaica.

First Lady Chirlane McCray announced the start of the NYC Unity Project on Tuesday. The initiative brings together 16 city agencies and creates new programs aimed at increasing awareness around issues and struggles many LGBTQ youth face.

Officials also announced a new 24-hour drop-in center specializing in LGBTQ issues will open in Jamaica next month.

“Young people can find refuge and support such as counseling and referrals to vital services,” McCray said. “Now, young people in those communities will have a safe and affirming place to get the support and services they need.”

“In fact, it seems the main goal of this initiative, if I had to sum it up, is to relieve the overwhelming stress that LGBTQ youth often have to endure,” added City Council Member Daniel Dromm.

The NYC Unity Project will also include training for more than 500 doctors at city hospitals along with a public awareness campaign.
