A colorful parade marking the end of summer makes it's way through Rockaway Beach. NY1's Shannan Ferry takes in the sights and sounds from the boardwalk.

Sea creatures of all kind invaded the Rockaways for the third annual Poseidon's Parade on Saturday.

"Today's the mermaid parade!" said one participant.

"Everyone looks great today," said another.

Hundreds gathered at Beach 105 Street, before using their feet or their fins to march down the boardwalk.

Inspired by the Coney Island Mermaid Parade, founder Casey Brouder said the goal is to give mythical creatures"a chance to flaunt floats and colorful costumes right in Queens.

It’s an event Brouder said is appropriate for all ages.

"We wanted it to be something family orientated, so when I see people walking down the block and they're working with their families, it's really nice! It brings me to tears," she said.

Many participants we spoke with said the parade is also the perfect way to say goodbye to summer.

Participant: "I just love Rockaway, I love it!"

    Reporter: "And sharks?"

    Participant: "And sharks!"

    Participant: "I'm a ballerina jellyfish!"

Reporter: "That's what your costume is today?

    Participant: "Yes!"

Creativity was at an all-time high.

Those we spoke with said having a memorable costume is a must.

"I recycled all the bottles from my building this week and I made myself a costume," said one parade-goer.

Reporter:"How long did it take you to put this costume together?"

    Participant: "Uh, my whole life."

A celebration of the sea and the summer, even some of the borough's four legged friends got dressed up for.
