Despite uncertainty over its future amid a lawsuit by the Diocese of Brooklyn, a local charter school celebrated the start of a new school year.

Monday marked the first day of classes for Middle Village Preparatory Charter School (MVP). Last year, the diocese filed a lawsuit against Christ the King High School for agreeing to rent space to MVP on its campus without seeking permission from the diocese first.

The fate of the school is still in limbo as the community awaits a judge's ruling.

Parents told NY1 they are optimistic the court will rule in their favor.

“Mostly, we are really confident that they school won’t close, at least for the next three years,” said parent Claudia Valdes.

“I am just wishing for the best, and like I said it is for all the current students and for the future also of siblings and everyone else in the community that deserves to have this school,” added parent Kathrine Mangano.

In response, the Diocese gave NY1 the following statement:

"We have no comment on pending litigation. However, we would like to emphasize that this dispute is between the Diocese of Brooklyn and Christ the King High School. The Diocese has no dispute with Middle Village Preparatory Charter School or its parents and students. We support them and want to see them have a successful school year. We hope there is as little disruption to them as possible while the situation with Christ the King is resolved.”
