A Queens man who volunteered to clean up at the World Trade Center site after 9/11, and had been facing deportation, has been released by immigration officials.

Construction worker Carlos Cardona, who developed a respiratory illness after helping at the World Trade Center during the weeks following the attacks, will not be deported according to his attorney. Governor Cuomo also granted the undocumented immigrant a pardon.

His release comes a day after Queens Congressman Joe Crowley launched a national petition calling for Cardona's release.

In February, immigration authorities arrested and detained him in New Jersey for a 27-year-old drug offense.

Although he is out of Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody, Cardona must periodically check in with the agency until his case is decided.
