People in Middle Village pounded the pavement this weekend in an effort to raise money in the fight against cancer.

Participants circled the track at Juniper Valley Park on Saturday into early Sunday for the 15th annual Relay for Life.

The overnight walkathon raises money each year for the American Cancer Society.

"This event is just an amazing event because you are doing something good, you're raising money for cancer research at the same time, you're enjoying what you're doing,” said Linda Helldorfer, who lost her husband to cancer.

This year organizers raised $220,000 to help those fighting the disease.

"We are definitely here to raise some money so that we can fight back against cancer, more research, more programs and services," said Carol Palacio, the senior community manager at Relay for Life.
