Some sixth-graders in Long Island City presented their proposals for a new school building Friday.

Hunter’s Point Community Middle School hosted the 2017 Design Expedition. Four 6th grade classes presented their proposals for the new LIC school to representatives from the city's Economic Development Corporation (EDC).

Each presentation included 3D models and blueprints along with a mission statement explaining the design and vision of each team.

Students say their focus was creating an eco-friendly building.

“We are going to be taking away native plants from the East River, so we are trying to make up for that and make it more sustainable for children so that we don't use as much energy,” said student Olivia Ballentine.

“The East River is very dirty and there is a bunch of pollution in the world we want to not cause that, we want to help and prevent it from happening,” added Dionysia Kourouklis, another student at the school.

The EDC says they plan to take students' input into consideration when coming up with a final design for the 80,000 square foot school.
