Some school kids in Ridgewood are doing their part to help make the city streets near their school safer.

Sixth graders from I.S. 77 helped unveil the first of 12 new traffic safety banners Monday morning.

For the last 5 months the Department of Transportation worked with the students on the banners design.

The collaboration is a part of the DOT’s Office of Safety Education's Traffic Safety Banner Residency Program.

Those involved say students learned about much more than traffic safety.

"It sets them up for participation as adults as adolescent to participate in the community and do good things and feel empower enough to do these things," said I.S. 77 6th grade teacher Valentina Loseva.

"Our most vulnerable population of students are kids, 11 to 14 who are walking, who are middle school kids, we were all middle school kids and they need extra protection," said Kim Wiley-Schwartz, Dept. of Transportation Assistant Commissioner for Safety Education and Outreach. "They need to do their part to stay focused, "she added.

Students picked the slogan "Do a good deed, don't speed" to be displayed on each banner.
