A library in the Rockaways is about to become more storm resilient.

Officials announced plans for a 7.6 million dollar expansion of the Arverne Community Library Wednesday.

The library was significantly damaged during Hurricane Sandy and was renovated two years later.

The three thousand square foot addition will be constructed on 12-foot stilts next to the existing library and will include children and teen reading rooms as well as a food pantry.

A wall will also be built around the existing structure to prevent flooding.

"It's important because it needs to be protected from any future storms so it will be elevated. It'll be safe for the future," said Melinda Katz, Queens Borough President.

"It'll be very unique to Arverne and Arverne is already a very popular library and this will allow it do just grow even more so," said Dennis Walcott, the President and CEO of the Queens Library.

The new addition is expected to open in about 4 to 5 years.
