The grocery chain Stop & Shop has teamed up with Queens Borough President Melinda Katz to donate one thousand hams to charity.

With the help of students from I-S 93, the hams were unloaded from an 18-wheeler in front of Borough Hall on Wendesday.

Five local organizations received the contributions and will be preparing meals or distributing the hams to families in need.

"Queens is so important to us and when we reached out to Melinda Katz office, they were more then excited to join us and to help get food to the folks who really need it this holiday season,"said Stop & Shop Community Relations Manager Cindy Carrasquilla.

"It's a great coalition of different groups today, and we're happy to be able to be a small assistance during the season," said Queens Borough President Melinda Katz.

The substantial donation is part of Stop and Shop's commitment to help local communities fight hunger.
