QUEENS, N.Y. - The city fire department is still trying to figure out what led to a firefighter's deadly fall in Queens.
William Tolley's fellow firefighters saluted his body as it was carried out of Wyckoff Hospital in Brooklyn Thursday.
The 42-year-old died while battling a fire at an apartment building in Ridgewood.
The flames broke out on the second floor shortly before 3 p.m.
Tolley was working on the roof when he fell five stories.
Witnesses say he was about to step into a bucket attached to the ladder when the bucket suddenly moved.
Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro says the exact circumstances of Tolley's fall are still unclear.
"There was nothing about the fire that really had anything to do with the accident that occurred. It was really in the operation that he was performing on the roof, which is a routine operation for us, and, somehow, he fell from the roof," Nigro said.
A memorial for Tolley has been set up outside his stationhouse in Glendale.
A bunting installation ceremony is planned for 5 p.m. Friday.
Tolley was a 14-year veteran of the Fire Department.
He was also a drummer for a death metal band called Internal Bleeding, and was set to go on tour next month.
In a statement on its Facebook page, the band called Tolley "a good, decent and honorable man."
